Minutes of a meeting of The Parochial Church Council, held on Tuesday July 3rd 2018

Present: – David Mann (Churchwarden), Margaret Chapman, Barbara Foster, Prue Meehan (Treasurer), Barbara Robinson (Secretary), Margaret Robinson,

In attendance: John White – St John The Evangelist, Warley

Barbara Foster took the chair for the meeting.  Prayers were said by John White

1 Apologies  Hilary Jamieson, Joyce Mawer, Daniel Russell, Jenny Scholefield, Brian Wood, Rev Martin Russell

2  Declaration of members’ interests – none

3  Minutes – The minutes of the meeting held on .May 8th 2018 .were received.  David Mann’s name to be removed from the list of those present and added to the list of apologies. The word “baptism” to be inserted into Rev Russell’s report in “Clergy Items”.  Subject to these amendments the minutes were adopted as a record of the meeting.

4  Matters arising

Meeting with Rev Robin Gamble – it was agreed to have been positive.

Data Protection – guidance from the diocese was awaited.  There was discussion about data that was held by the church.  It was agreed that full names should not be used in Prayer Board requests without the permission of the subject.

Planning for Remembrance Day – It was suggested that Rev Greenwood might contact the Cubs and Scouts to request their input.  Knitted poppies were being made.

5  St John’s Item

John White reported on forthcoming events including a Community Arts Day on Aug. 1st; Rushbearing ; a CICS fundraising event; Warley Village lights at the end of November.  Details would be sent for the parish magazine.

John White also reported that Rev Canon Stephen Bradberry would be retiring and leaving his post at the end of October.  Lay Pastoral Care training was being planned and St Hilda’s people would be included.

6  Churchwardens’ Report

It was noted that arrangements for Rev Greenwood’s Inauguration service were in hand.  Invitations had been sent out.

Development Group Report– It was noted that ten new folding tables had been delivered; the North and south doors and the Whitby Room would be closed for the first week in August for repairs to the flooring.

It was noted that the full Guttering Maintenance report was not yet available due to faults with the National Churches Trust’s website.  Initial photographs showed several defects needing repair.  The group would discuss the full report and make recommendations.  Members thanked Barbara Robinson for the work on the guttering maintenance.

Several people expressed concern about Church cleaning because of the workload.  It was agreed that the subject be referred to the Development Group for detailed discussion.

 7  Treasurer’s Report

Prue Meehan reported that the current financial position was good.  The initial guttering maintenance work had been paid for and the cost of the flooring could be met.  Payment of the Parish Share was on track.  Ecclesiastical Insurance had asked permission to trial a drone to survey the church.  There was discussion of current rental agreements with the various user groups and the upholstery business using the Scout Hut.  It was proposed and agreed that due to the increased costs of utilities the following increased should be made:

Children’s Corner Pre-School rent should be increased from £5.50/hr to &6/hr from 1st September 2018

Elsa Upholstery (Mr Steve Davey) rent increased from £300 to £315/month from 1st January 2019

HLOS Juniors rent increased from £350 to £370 from 1st September 2018

Barbara Robinson to prepare letters for Prue Meehan’s signature.

No increase in the uniformed organisations’ contributions was proposed.

8  Report from Lay conference June 9th

David Mann and Daniel Russell had attempted the conference, “Together in Faith“ in June. They had attended Workshops and there had been an inspiring opening address.

9  Clergy Items 

In Rev Russell’s absence, discussion was postponed.  There was brief discussion of a confidential pastoral care item.

10 Deanery Synod Report

Margaret Robinson reported on the meeting of the combined (3) Deaneries attended by Bishop Nick, which had been held at St Michael’s, Mytholmroyd in June.

11 Calendar of church activities

Margaret Chapman spoke about the forthcoming local Heritage weekend and Back to Church Sunday in September.  She was hoping to make contacts with Asian women linked to the local mosque because there was currently no progress in building a relationship.  Margaret also spoke about plans for Melina Galibona from Mara to speak in October

12 Churches Together

David Mann reported on plans for the West View Park Fun Day on July 14th.  There were plans for an Open the Book type story of Daniel and the Lions and the choir would sing.

13 Mara

It was reported that the June collection for Mugumu safe house had been £55.  A woman working at the safe house would be visiting in October and coming to speak at St Hilda’s on October 18th.

14 Any other business

Margaret Chapman asked for a review of the Safeguarding policies and the Health and Safety policies to be carried out before December 2018.
