St Hilda’s Church

Minutes of a meeting of The Parochial Church Council, held on Tuesday May 8th 2018

 Present: -Hilary Jamieson, (Chairman, Churchwarden), David Mann (Churchwarden), Margaret Chapman, Barbara Foster, Joyce Mawer, Barbara Robinson, Margaret Robinson, Daniel Russell, Brian Wood.

In attendance:  Rev Martin Russell, clergy representative , John White – St John The Evangelist, Warley

The meeting opening with prayer

Election of PCC officers – Vice-Chairman – Mrs Hilary Jamieson, Treasurer – Mrs Prue Meehan , Secretary – Mrs Barbara Robinson.  Mrs Margaret Chapman was asked to continue as observer to St John’s PCC meetings

Welcome to new members – Daniel Russell, elected at APCM

2 Declaration of members’ interests – none

 3 Minutes

The minutes of the meeting held on March 25th 2018 were proposed, seconded and adopted as correct record.

Notes of the meeting held on April 29th to to approve acceptance of a quote for guttering maintenance, were tabled.  The notes were approved  (copy attached in Minutes book)

4 Matters arising

New Incumbent:  There was no official confirmation of the appointment but a letter was expected shortly.

Roles within the church – a draft form was tabled and agreed for use

Churches Together report – Aileen Atkinson had sent a brief report on current activities; the annual West View Fun Day would be on July 14th.  News from Churches Together was welcomed. It was agreed that it should be a regular agenda item.

5 St John’s Items

John White reported that he would probably continue as St John’s observer to St Hilda PCC meetings  A flower-arranging event was planned June 16th.  The Songs of Praise was cancelled due to Yvonne Moore’s illness.

6 Churchwardens’ Report

Church information leaflet – there had been no progress on a leaflet.

Development Group  – an update on current work was received.

Meeting with Bishop Jonathan and Rev Robin Gamble – there had been some confusion about a proposed meeting but Robin Gamble would visit on May 13th to meet the PCC

New Data Protection rules – John Harrison had been asked to advise; further guidance was expected from the diocese on the Electoral Roll.

7 Treasurer’s Report

Mrs Meehan had reported that the arrangement for payment of fees for heating for funerals and weddings had changed.  She was unhappy about charging when the service was for a church member.

8 Clergy Items

Rev Russell reported that the Mosque visit to St Hilda’s was delayed because of Ramadan;  attendance at the Lay conference June 9th was reported as low by the diocese Daniel Russell and David Mann planned to go

Planning for Remembrance Day– it was agreed that the Cubs and Scouts should be more closely involved as the relationship needed strengthening.

Rev Russell reported that a had been booked for Sunday July 29th.

There was confidential discussion of a pastoral matter.

9 Deanery Synod Report

The June meeting would be a joint meeting of Calderdale Deaneries, which Bishop Nick would attend.

 10 Calendar of church activities

Litter pick, May 26th;  Community awards ceremony June 21st – the choir would sing. Heritage weekend was mid September and it was hoped to have a display using some of the Centenary information.

11 Mara

It was noted that a letter from St Luke’s had been received after a gap of over 2 years.  Members was asked to consider whether the voluntary donations for tea/coffee at Sunday services and Wednesday Coffee Afternoons during June could be given to Mara for the Mugumu safe house, as had happened last year.  The proposal was agreed.

12 Any other business

Barbara Foster asked that there should always be two people to set up/take down the polling station equipment after elections.  She also reported that the lighting in the Whitby Room had been poor during the election day.  It was noted that an electrician had already been asked to deal with the problem.

There had been meetings with Mehreen and Chris Butler regarding use of the building and possible donations towards costs of the flooring/lighting.

It was noted that Revs. Russell would cover two services a month at Claremount.
